Adline C. Clarke owned and operated Black Classics Books & Gifts, an African-American specialty bookstore and gift shop from 1998-2011. In 2012, the company began operating as “Jambalaya” in the Urban Emporium to test the waters downtown.
“For most of my adult life, I have lived and worked in downtown Mobile. I have watched the business and entertainment district transform from a virtual ghost town when I began working at the Mobile Press Register to the beautiful, vibrant district that it has become,” Clarke said. “I love downtown Mobile.”
Clarke pursued her dream of opening a specialty bookstore after working as a newspaper journalist for nearly 20 years. She is a former business editor and city editor of the Mobile Press Register. In 2013, she was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. She represents District 97, which includes downtown and mid-town Mobile, Brookley and part of the Dauphin Island Parkway area.
Clarke is a graduate of Spring Hill College, Leadership Mobile and Leadership Alabama. She is a member of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and received Eagle Awards from the Chamber twice. One of her favorite activities is participating in Mobile International Festival, where she represents The Gambia, located near Senegal on the southwest Coast of Africa. She has yet to visit the country, but has learned about it from an African trader from whom she purchased beads, baskets and other collectibles for many years. Jambalaya seeks to provide a variety of quality gift and collectible items at reasonable prices.
